to beare it and live in the hopes this war will close soon as for taking Richmond from this way it will be impossibel [sic. impossible]. Burnsides plan on the fight here at Fredricksburg [sic. Fredericksburg] was very good but his eyes were bigger then his belly. Our men never fought better but it Amounted to nothing if we had renewed the fight on Sunday. We should have been cut up so that it would have been impossible to have Advanced but I am getting this sheet full and I shall have to close. I got a letter from Aunt Cornielie last week. They said they were goeing [sic. going] to Uncle Elys that week. This is al I can think of at present so good by from your affectionate son C A Gates
