the 11th broke out the first fire and that broke the left & right of the 12th & 5th so the rebs drove our right back about a mile then the 3rd corps was brought up and formed a new line in the rear of them behind a thick peace [sic. piece] of woods and when the rebs charged through the woods it was certain death. They were driven back with terible [sic. terrible] slaughter. They tried it 2 times but were driven back every time with great slaughter. the dead rebels lay in front of our batterys 3 deep. Sunday morning they made another ground attack it lasted till most noon. Then we fell back about 1 mile and formed a better line in a good position. The rebs thought they had whiped [sic. whipped] us and rushed out of the woods after us but we drove them back again killing them our battery was ordered front on to the Gordonsville road and we opened on a rebel battery and they opened with
