smart fight we haven't taken the hight [sic. heights] yet. I don't know wheather [sic whether] Hooke [sic. Hooker] is goeing [sic. going] to storm the Hights [sic. Heights] or not. I think we are only goeing [sic. going] to fight them a little and keep their forces in front of us till Grant & Banks take Vicksburg & port Hudson. We have had reasons to think here for the last 3 or 4 days that the rebels were evacuating Fredericksburg but we will make mister rebs understand that we have got a Army here yet strong enough to keep them in front of us. Grant has got a pretty tough job before him but I think he will pitch them to ruins if the people at home will only give him time. If he takes Vicksburg in one month
