first-rate unless it teaches us something - not merely please us. The critic who insists on absence of purpose is shown - by the greatest examples of the past, and by the working of the time-spirit - to be an antiquated, anachronism. Undoubtedly, the novel without a purpose will continue to be written for the younger generation; but in the twentieth century, I believe, the adult and educated public will more and more demand from its literary workmen adult interests, adult sympathies, a philosophic aim, an ethical purpose.
