III. Simple Relative Clauses. Relative clauses, which in modern French have the verb in the subjunctive, are thus divided:- 1. Relative Clauses of Purpose and Result, after verbs of Wishing, Commanding, and the like. 2. Relative Clauses after Superlatives. 3. " " " General Negatives. 4. " " " conditional Sentences. 5. " " " General Interrogatives. 6. " " " Indefinite Antecedents. The Latin construction is similar, also requiring the subjunctive in these classes of relative clauses. In the Chanson de Roland, No.s 5 and 6 do not occur; as for the rest, the usage is as follows. 1. Relative Clauses after Verbs of Wishing, [&c?]. But few examples were found in the Chanson de Roland of this class of relative clauses. In the two instances given the subjunctive is used.
