Fifty-three. April 12, 1918. Sweetheart, Perhaps the little note I wrote this afternoon was number fifty-three. If so, you can count this as a continuation. I'm waiting after hours in the office for the arrival of the Associated Press and the International News correspondents. They've been delayed by car trouble, and someone must stay up to handle their despatches when they arrive. It is so still in this place that my pen scratches almost make echos. I'm writing at a pine table covered with a strip of oilcloth. My light comes from a smoky kerosene lamp. Registering atmosphere of a field headquarters, you see. In the mail that came over from headquarters this evening I had a letter from
