Captain Adams, who is not commonplace, looked at his watch and remarked casually that his wife was probably at lunch. He did it in a man's way, but he showed where his heart was. Many years experience at being married had not made it easy for him to be separated from his wife. I inwardly blessed him for making me feel that perhaps my own disposition was not unreasonable. I didn't try to write last night. Writing as often as I do I fear I inflict a great deal of unconsidered stuff on you. It struck me I might be less stale the next time if I spared you one evening's reflections. So I piled into bed and read by candlelight two articles in an old copy of the Atlantic
