Saving...
6 hear them breaking to our left and rear and could see them exploding on a slope from two to five hundred yards on our right. None came near us. We had lunch in a dugout with the battalion commander and his staff, and returned late in the afternoon to our car. We found the driver (Jack Corper) a bit excited over the fact that a shell had exploded about fifty feet from him. He has been a driver in the Vanderbilt cup races. The thrill of racing was pretty slow he thought beside the experience of being shelled. No harm had been done, however, and we were able to make the long drive home at the Cadillac's best pace without mishap or unusual incident. I am glad to have had the experience of being under fire, even though it wasn't a very heavy or dangerous fire, because I know now how it effects me.
