Thirty-nine. March 26, 1918. My own Beloved, Tonight I think I'll write only a little note to you while I sit a moment to clear the war out of my head. The day has been rather trying. It isn't pleasant to hear how the Boches are advancing even though we know that they are not likely to get through. And I've just had a little experience that made the tragedy of war a bit too realistic for comfort. With an Australian newspaper man and a representative of the McClure syndicate whom I had been detailed to conduct to the front I was in a first aid station when a doughboy who had been caught by the burst of a shell was brought in.
