They stopped for the message to both Houses asking for a declaration of war. I'll not soon be forgetting the scene of those around me listening even though everyone of them knew what was coming. It seems ages since I left Centerville and already a long time since I left you. It seems I've had so many thoughts and feelings both personal and in respect to public affairs that I could not possibly have experienced them all in so short a time. Then all the county business they are stuffing into us too makes it all the more complicated. Thank you dear for your patience and loving of me even when my conduct is to you befuddling. I can't get on paper how I appreciate your affection, both always and in particular in times like last night. Laddie! I hope that at every opportunity I may be as good to you. I think we both value our being sincere to each other, and such a trust or confidence or whatever one would
