[page]15.[/page] the contents, PL. I. fig. 1. The elaters when fully developed are very irregular consisting of two or three cells irregularly joined. They are colorless or slightly tinged with yellow. PL. I. fig. c. & d. The spores are small, flatish and vary in outline from angular to naerly circular. They contain chlorophyll bearing protoplasm, and are yellow when ripe. PL. I. fig. e. & f. Near the under surface of the thallus, small globular masses are found. PL. I. fig. 3. g., which were formerly supposed to be endogenous gemmae, but which Janczewski regards as stomata through which filaments of nostoe penetrate. The root hairs by which they are attached are slender thread like cells among which no amphigastria are distinguishable. PL. I. fig. 3. [l or b?].
