[page]19.[/page] the bare washed roots of the hickory trees near the pasture gate, and under the old steps at the head of the city street it is not wanting. In the Green-house it reaches a wonderful development and beauty which is most nearly equaled in the wild state when it grows on water washed rocked in deeply shaded nooks. Here some of the fronds sometimes form rosettes which measure six inches across, while others are crowded so closely as to be almost erect and with their fruit-bearing organs raised on pedicles about two inches in length: making a total height of four or more inches, and resembles miniature forests. When we look at it more closely, we notice that the fronds are thick, creeping, rather brittle, and dichotomously branched,
