When the gemmae fall to the ground, no matter which side falls uppermost the colorless cells on the side next the ground, begin to send out rhizoids while those on the upper side are changed under the influence of the sun to form the dorsal surface. After they are attached to the ground, new fronds begin to grow out from the lateral buds.
