[page]29.[/page] The areas between the stomata are large and infolded to form flask shaped receptacles. PL. VIII. fig. 7. d.d. in which the antheridia are formed. Each sac contains but a single erect atitheridium. This is a short stalked oval shaped body, formed from the subdivision of a single cell, and hence morphologically a trichome. At the base of the short stalk three or four papillae, (paraphyses) are usually found. The wall of the antheridium consists of a single layer of chlorophyll-bearing cells, PL.VIII. fig. 2.a. as does the short stalk.
