They ripen gradually from the base of the antheridium upwards, become rounded and more or less free. Finally the wall is broken through at the apex and the cells escape into the surrounding moisture where their walls soon swell and break and the speratozoids are set free. PL. VIII. The latter are very small, thread like and provided with two slender threads of cilia by means of which they propel themselves through the water with great activity.
