The stomata are not very abundant owing to the elongation of the air cavities above each of which but one stoma occurs as may be shown in a surface section of that part: The point where the green strip of tissue of the stem reaches the disk is neutral and may be regarded as the point of departure of subsequent branching of parts which form the disk. Here as before the stem is inserted near the neutral point, and the structure of the disk is zygomorphic and not radial. The most marked difference between the sterile and fertile disks is that in the latter the archegonia are borne on the underside of the disk.
