[page]33.[/page] This is due to an early transfer of tissue from the dorsal to the ventral surface, and as a result the archegonium at the apex of each ray are older than those near the stem. Eacy ray is marked on the ventral side, by a groove which extends from its apex to the stem, PL.III. fig.3. In the grooves the true ventral surface is found, from which pendant rhizoids arise. If a true median vertical section is made through the disk it will pass between the two posterior rays and through an anterior row of archegonia, PL.VIII. fig. IV. The air-cavities in it are seen to extend from the stem over the upper side toward the anterior margin. Between and underlying the air-cavities large celled tissue is found
