Each air chamber with its richly chlorophyll bearing cells and its central patch of active working cells may be regarded as a highly complicated structure for manufacturing purposes. Through the open stoma, the gasses, moisture, and sunlight enter and are absorbed to form chlorophyll which in its turn produces starch, and in this respect the lowly Liverworts and the most highly differentiated plants agree. The starch is present in large granules in the underlying layers of tissue which are destitute of chlorophyll.
