[page]46.[/page] observed in the preceeding two species, PL.XIV.4, but instead of a single layer of air cavities, the cells are joined so as to form several series of air chambers. The upper series contains [confema?]-like cells and communicates with the external air by stomata. The latter are apparently more highly complicated than those of M. polymorpha and hang down into the air cavities like small cups or inverted cones. PL.XIV.2. A surface section of a stoma is shown in same plate. The epidermal systems and the lower layer of closely arranged cells are nearly colorless, the latter containing starch. The network of cells and other parts are richly chlorophyll bearing.
