48. in the preceeding species. The spores are yellowish brown in color. A vertical, and transverse section of the carpocephalum is shown in PL.XVI. It has the same distribution as have the preceeding two species, and is found chiefly along shaded banks of streams. The characters which mark the order Marchantiaceae as illustrated by these three species are - 1. a dichotomously or radially branching thallus, scaly beneath. 2. a well marked usually porose epidermis. 3. a spherical short-stalked capsule, opening irregularly or by imperfect valves, often pendulent from the under surface of a receptacle. 4. Elaters present with spiral fibers
