[page]57.[/page] protoplasm. PL.XIX. The fruit appears on the main stem or branches in May. There are two to four comparatively large involucral leaves which form the parianth. This is tubular below and acutely three angular above. Its mouth is three lobed, the lobes being tooth-created (see plate). There are minute scale like leaves at its base. The calypha is short, circumsissal at the base, or rupturing irregularly at the apex. The capsule is brown, globular and exserted above the parianth on a long colorless thread like peduncle. It opens by four somewhat irregular valves. PL.XIX.
