After boiling away the excess of sulphurous acid the solution will give, as a test for hydroxylamine, a precipitate of cuprous oxide with an alkali and copper sulphate. Should there be much sulphurous acid present, this test will not apply as the sulphurous acid destroys the hydroxylamine. The potassium salt of hydroxylamine disulphorus acid is formed by mixing solutions of potassium nitrite and potassium sulphite in such proportions that the mixture shall contain one molecule of the first less than four molecules of the second.
