um sulphate, -- the filtrate then contains free hydroxylamine: -- (NH[subscript]3[/subscript]OH)[subscript]2[/subscript]SO[subscript]4[/subscript] + Ba(HO)[subscript]2[/subscript] = 2(NH[subscript]3[/subscript]OH) + BaSO[subscript]4[/subscript] + H[subscript]2[/subscript]O. The solution should be kept as concentrated as possible so as to avoid loss of substance. Picric acid is added to the filtrate until it becomes neutral, -- after which it is allowed to crystallize.
