[page]38[/page] [underlined]Reduction of Nitrites to Hydroxylamine by Hydrogen Sulphide[/underlined] -- A solution of an alkali nitrate, saturated with hydrogen sulphide and acidified with hydrochloric acid yields sulphur nitric oxide and ammonia but no hydroxylamine. But if silver nitrite is suspended in water and treated with hydrogen sulphide, hydroxylamine is produced together with sulphur, nitric oxide and ammonia. On adding hydrochloric acid to the filtrate and evaporating to dryness a mixture of ammonium and hydroxylammonium
