[page]55[/page] potassium acetate, an alkaline mixture containing some sulphite is left. Hydroxylamine monosulphonate decomposes in the presence of hot acid: -- 2HONHSO[subscript]3[/subscript]H + 2H[subscript]2[/subscript]O = (NH[subscript]3[/subscript]OH)[subscript]2[/subscript]SO[subscript]4[/subscript] + H[subscript]2[/subscript]SO[subscript]4[/subscript]. In the presence of hydrogen potassium carbonate, this acid reacts with iodine solution as a hydroxylamine salt but much slower.
