3 As to the formation of Carbo-hydrates little is definitely known. Glucose is derived by the action of an unorganized ferment from one or other of the Carbo-hydrates which are stored up as reserve material. Of these carbo-hydrates all that is know is that they are derived in the case of green plants from the non-nitrogenous organic substance, whatever it may be, which is formed in the chlorophyll corpuscle, under the influence of light, and in plants destitute of chlorophyll, from the organic substance supplied to them for food.
