13 excretion is affected by the breaking away of the cuticle which is continuous over the glandular cell. The excretion is then poured down over the hair and as each little glandular cell does its specified work, each little hair becomes covered by this excreted substance and the whole plant is found to be very sticky. All this must serve some purpose in particular, and it is found to be either to render the plant unpalatable to herbivorous animals and thereby preserve the species, or to impede the way of insects which are too small to be of any aid in fertil-
