18 Silicon and Alkaloids are conspicuous examples of the secretion in the cells of the interior plant tissue. Very few of the substances are found free in the cells but appear in combination with other matter in the form of crystals or cystoliths. Silicon is often found in the wall of the cell and calcium carbonate especially is present in the cell-wall in the form of cystoliths. Both crystals and cystoliths are deposited in the deciduous parts of the plant, such as the leaves, fruit, seed, or bark, in order that they may not stay permanantly in the tissue, thus they seem
