19 to be indubitable excretious. Crystals of themselves, are not secretious, but are precipitations which are the result of the combination of two chemical elements formed in the cell. Calcium oxalate crystals result from the combination of Oxalic Acid, excreted by the cell, and Protoxide of Lime found free in the cell sap. In this manner the lime, which otherwise would be deposited in such abundance in the plant tissues as to impede or materially injure the the activity of the cell, is gotten rid of by this precipitation, so as not to harm
