25 surface, is not a sudden one. On the contrary the one blends into the other very naturally. First we may have a layer of individual glandular cells, then this simple layer may be modified in such a way as to line a depression which may be closed over and at last form a sac or cavity. This is the manner of the formation of a gland in its strictest sense. The first stage is a row of secreting cells placed above some ground tissue, then this structure may become convoluted and in such a manner that most complex glands may be formed.
