26 In studying the leaves of the Balm of Gilead, which are very sticky, the surface is found to be covered by unicellular hairs which are but elongations of the epidermal cells and which are not differentiated, apparently for a special purpose, but evidently partake of the same general nature and function of the surrounding cells. Thus the whole surface of epidermal cells must be secretory. A few of these plant hairs are shown in Fig. 5. Plate II.
