39 The latex tubes are formed by the coalescence of secreting cells, forming tubes which branch and ramify in all directions making in expanse a great network through the plant tissue. They really might be classified next to the individual cells which form a secreting surface, as the tubes are formed only by the coalescence of cells which individually perform the work of secretion. The secretion is a milky fluid called latex which is found in the milk-weeds and the euphorbiaceae. The plant here studied is the chickory root.
