43 Of the gum-resinous species, those yielding asafoetida hold first rank. The fetid odor is supposed to be owing to sulphur in combination with their peculiar essential oils. Asafoetida is the milky juice of various species of Ferula inhabiting Persia and neighboring countries. Among those whcih serve as pleasant condiments or for their aromatic fruits, we have anise, caraway and corianer. Of the poisons, Conium or Hemlock is the most notorious.
