6. "Some species are found flourishing on the mountains of Greenland and the desert plains of Africa. They have been found near the hot spring of [illegible], China and [fringing?] the geysers of Iceland, where they must have vegetated in heat equal to 186 degrees, again they have been gathered in [Mellville?] Islands at 33 degrees a little above the freezing point." However, they increase in luxuriance, beauty, and abundance as they near the north pole. They love moist and shady places, woody hills and rocky ravines.
