14. This soon divides by cross partitions, into about as many cells as there are coils of the spiral. From below this there now shoots out a branch - the antheridium (Pl. III fig. 2. -b.) which grows up along the outside of the spiral, and there comes in contact with the top-most coil, a connection is formed and the protoplasm of the antheridium mingles with that of the carpogonium, this fertilizing
