The azimuth screw acting upon the west end of the axis of the instrument is furnished with a head of 1 inch diameter; and graduated to one hundredths; The readings were taken to tenths of a graduation thus giving readings to the one thousandth of a revolution. The reading for the middle line having been taken the screw was turned forward until D[[subscript]]4[[/subscript]] bisected the cross and the reading again taken. The screw was once more turned forward and the readings taken for the wires D[[subscript]]5[[/subscript]], E[[subscript]]1[[/subscript]], E[[subscript]]3[[/subscript]], E[[subscript]]5[[/subscript]], F and G successively.
