[[page#]]5[[/page#]] the wires in successive order, the difference between E[[subscript]]3[[/subscript]] and F, B and C[[subscript]]5[[/subscript]], D[[subscript]]3[[/subscript]] and B, and A and G have been found; this giving longer sums of the screw and reducing the error in reading. The arithmetic mean of these successive differences is placed at the foot of the column. In the column with heading delta delta is placed the square of the residuals between the difference in reading for two successive wires, and the arithmetic mean of the differences. The plus, or minus sign is prefixed to the square of the residual simply to indicate the sign of the residual itself. The residual being considered a correction to be added algebraically to the observation.
