1 Introduction. It has been said that necessity is the mother of invention, to this we may add with equal conclusions, invention is the mother of progress. No better proof of this is necessary than reference to a scene which occurred but a few weeks ago in New York harbor. It is early morning, the rising sun has just pierced the dense mist hanging low ever the harbor and lighted with it's golden rays the torch of Liberty. All is quiet save the puff! puff! of a solitary, bustling ferry-boat plowing it's noisy way from shore to shore and the monotonous plashing of the waves along the docks. The broad waters of the bay are calm and placid and the countless thousands of yon' teeming cities have not yet begun their day's toil.
