2 Yonder rises a cloud of smoke, and slowly a great black hulk [churns?] out into the [channel?]. Once in mid-stream, with prow turned toward the sea, it stops, hesitates, and then, as though endowed with life, springs forward and dashes onward down the bay. What a magnificent picture this gigantic steamer presents as it rushes through the waves, [cleaving?] them asunder with her keen-edged bow, leaving in wake a snowy trail trail of foam! From the triple stacks belch forth clouds of inky smoke contrasting strongly with the snowy deck and [spars?]. How dazzling the polished brass-work glistening in the morning sun and how gaily the flags and pennants flutter from prow and peak and stern.
