In the form invented by Captain John Davis in 1590 the eye was placed at B and the observer looked through C for the horizon and A for the sun. Bouger's method was to place the eye at C look at the horizon through B which was illuminated by light from the sun through A In the instrument shown in Fig. 4 there is no arc.
