25 Hadley and Godfrey each received a reward of [pound sign] 200 from the Royal Society. The vernier was invented by Pierre Vernier, who gave a description of it in 1631, in his book on the quadrant. He however used only one form of it, that in which there was one less division on the vernier than on the same space on the scale. The construction of the sextant has been greatly improved in modern times, The points to which attention has been paid are, to render the instrument as light and handy as possible without taking from it's strength and stiffness, to divide the arc and vernier properly, which is now usually done by an automatic dividing engine, and to make the instrument as mechanically perfect
