Cu from C will be parallel. When the mirrors (bc and n) are parallel the index arm has the position DJ and the index gears the position bc. The eye at E sees the direct and reflected images of B in coincidence. Near the index arm to the position DJ' so that the direct image of C and the reflected image of B will coincide. The ray from B is reflected by (b'c') to the horizon glass (n) and [thence?] to the observers eye at E. The angle between B and C is, as the cut plainly shows BDC' which is the angle between the first direction of the ray BD and CE the last or what is the same thing C'D its parallel.
