31 Description of the Pistor and Martins' Sextant. In addition to the photographs and explanations given at the beginning of this thesis it is perhaps unnecessary to say but a few words in the way of a description of the Pistor and Martins' sextant. By far the most important and characteristic feature of this instrument is, that the horizon glass is replaced by a totally reflecting prism by means of which angles of any magnitude may be measured. With the common sextant angles greater than 120° cannot be measured. Besides, the rays from the direct object come to the telescope without passing through any medium, such as the unsilvered part of a horizon glass. The direct and reflect-ed images are much clearer than is usual in other instruments.
