36 (2) Those in which the number is one more. The principle of the Vernier is this;--If the two extreme divisions of the Vernier coincide with two divisions on the scale or arc it follows, there being one division more or one division less on the Vernier than in the same space on the arc, that more of the other divisions will coincide. If there are (n) spaces on the Vernier the first division will vary from the first on the arc by +- 1/n divisions according to the class of Vernier, the second by +- 2/n and so on, the last varying by +- n/n or 1 division, which means that the last two divisions coincide. In using the Vernier we note the position of its Vernier; if it does not coincide with a mark we read ahead until we find a mark
