on the Vernier which does. Dividing the reading of the [[underline]]Vernier [[/underline]] by ([[n?]]) gives us the fractional part of a division which is to be added to to the reading of the [[underline]]arc[[underline]]. For instance, suppose the number of divisions on the Vernier is 10 and that the 0 mark is just ahead of 15 on the scale, we look along the Vernier and see that the 5th space coincides with a mark on the scale. The reading then is 15 + 5/10 = 15.5 spaces. Where the number of divisions on the Vernier is one less than the number on the scale it is read in a direction opposite to that in which the direct reading is made. The scale or arc is usually read forward from right to left. With this form of Vernier we read from left to right or backward. Verniers of this kind
