(i.e - of the first class) were the only ones used by Pierre Vernier the inventor. On Pistor and Martins' sextants, the arc is graduated to 10' and the least count is 10". The Vernier is peculiar, in that it embodies in the one Vernier both classes. To the right of the 0 (of the Vernier) we have 60 spaces corresponding with 61 on the arc. To the left of it we have 60 spaces corresponding to 59 on the arc. The Vernier on the left of 0 is a second class Vernier (see definitions), that on the right first class. The former is read directly, the latter in a direction opposite to the numbering of the arc. The reading of the one serves as a check on the reading of the other. The divisions on the arc are marked and numbered in this way: -- Every 10th degree is marked above
