The time altitude = 2 alpha+gamma/2 Instrumental errors are corrected by adding to or subtracting from the observed angle. Many kinds of artificial horizons have been used, such as molasses, various kinds of oils, polished metal plates with leveling screws, etc. I have tried molasses and found it fairly satisfactory. Perhaps the best form is that in use at the S.U.I. observatory (see photo at the beginning of this thesis) which consists of a small rectangular iron basin 6" x 3.5" x 1.25" exposing a surface of mercury 2.5" x 5". This basin is coated on the inner surface with red sealing wax
