prevents the adhesion of the mercury to the ion. The opening of the basin is not square but our corner is covered over so as to permit easy pouring of the mercury through a small hole in the side. The size and shape of the basin is shown very well in the photograph. To prevent the agitation of the surface of the mercury by the wind, the basin is provided with a "house" or cover formed of two squares of plate glass (3" x 4") set at right angles in a metal frame. The base of this frame is 3 1/2" x 6" x 1" (interior measure) and just fits the basin. The basin sits high inside the cover and the whole surface of the mercury is well exposed to view. The glass plates may be taken out or adjusted by removing or loosening the three screws with washers shown
