in the photograph. The mercury is kept in a metal bottle provided with a funnel for pouring it into the basin. In pouring it from the basin into the bottle this funnel is unscrewed, inverted and screwed into the neck of the bottle by means of threads near the "point," forming a sort of cup. The stopper which screws into the neck of the bottle ([illegible] the funnel) should always be in place when the mercury is not in use in the basin. To set up the horizon we proceed follows:-- Remove the telescope of the transit instrument. Carefully wipe out the inside of the basin and place it on the transit frame according to marks which will be found filed upon it. Unscrew the top of the mercury bottle and remove the stopper.
