Screw on the funnel, invert the bottle holding the finger over the end of the funnel. This causes all the [illegible] to rise to the surface of the mercury. Now pour the mercury carefully into the basin stopping before all of it runs out so as to leave the scum in the bottle. If it should appear on the surface brush it to one side with a card but do not attempt to remove it. This can only be done by filtering through a cloth or chamois skin or by putting in a little tin foil and and removing the amalgam. If the mercury is agitated by currents of air it will be necessary to use the "house" or cover. Before putting it over the basin make sure that the plates of glass are perfectly clean.
